The Tillamook Cheddar Mid-Career Retrospective 1999-2009
Opening reception: Friday, June 19, 6 - 9 pm
Exhibition runs through Aug. 16, 2009
Tillamook Cheddar is a 10-year-old Jack Russell Terrier who is widely regarded as the world’s preeminent canine artist. “Tillie” has shown in 19 solo exhibitions and 15 group exhibitions, as well as numerous benefit exhibitions in the United States and Europe. She uses a dynamic color transfer technique to create her work.
“The most successful living animal painter.”
-The Art Newspaper
“A masterpiece of conceptualism.”
-Time Out New York
“When possessed by an artistic vision, Tillie is fearless.”
CBS News Sunday Morning, Good Morning America, Inside Edition, Fox News Live, The CBS Early Show, Late Night with Conan O’Brien, The National Geographic Network, Animal Planet, The New York Post, The Washington Times, Esquire Magazine, and many others worldwide have featured Tillie.
Her primary process is a dynamic color transfer technique. In preparation for each of Tillie’s works, her assistants assemble a touch-sensitive recording device by affixing pigment-coated vellum to a sheet of lithograph paper backed by mat board. The artist takes the prepared “canvas” in her mouth and brings it to her workspace. Working on the outside surface, she applies pressure with teeth and claws in a methodic ritual marked by dramatic shifts in tempo and intensity. The resulting sharp and sweeping intersecting lines complement the artist’s delicate paw prints and subtle tongue impressions, composing an expressionistic image that is revealed on the paper beneath when she is finished. She works with shocking intensity, sometimes to the point of destroying her creations.
This exhibit will also include some collaborative works Tillie has produced with artists. In the past Tillie has worked with such as internationally known artists as Jon Kessler, Tom Sachs and Dirk Westphal.
