Concerning Similarities and Differences: Drawing on Likeness
Saturday, January 18 - Sunday, March 15, 2020
Though Ivelisse Jimenez, Gustavo Prado and Lidija Slavkovic work with different materials, imagery, structures, processes and forms, their approach to making has more in common than one might at first imagine. In a sense they share a likeness – a family resemblance. They hold in common certain conceptual as well as material characteristics, which they have morphed by their cross-breeding and inbreeding. Consequently, each work partakes of a general economy consisting of the political, cultural and historical appropriation, as well as issues of perception and cognition. By bringing this sampling of their works together, my objective is to generate an environment in which the correspondences and differences between their works unfold to reveal, wherein resides the effort of the artist, the work art does and the role of the viewer.
