The U.S. premiere of a first-of-its-kind exhibition features hundreds of images of vernacular photography found online by artists John D. Monteith and Oliver Wasow. From the bizarre to the sublime, these anonymously sourced amateur photographs provide a fascinating view of American culture through the new frontier of social media.

Michael O'Brien: Impact Zone

Michael O’Brien loves the water. More specifically, the salt water- the ocean. Surfing for 35 years, O’Brien has surfed from California to the north shore of Oahu. His work is an expression of 20 years with a camera in the impact zone.

Ryan Humphrey: Fast Forward

BMX Opening Extravaganza: Sat., June 18, 12-4 pm

New-York-based contemporary artist Ryan Humphrey incorporates BMX bikes in dynamic 2- and 3-dimensional works. Fast Forward features a large-scale, floor-to-ceiling installation in which BMX bikes are attached to the gallery walls. The installation includes a massive wrap-around rug, a collection of bike-inspired paintings and mixed-media pieces, and three interpretations of Marcel Duchamp’s Bicycle Wheel (1913) set against BMX bike ramps. An interactive activity area is also a part of the exhibition.

Fifth All-Media Juried Biennial

Exhibition Jurors: Scott Murray, Owner and Director, Twenty Twenty Projects, Miami; Michelle Weinberg, artist, Creative Director, Girls’ Club, Fort Lauderdale.

The All-Media Juried Biennial will include paintings, drawings, prints, sculpture, photography, video, computer-generated images, site-specific installations, and performance art from Florida-based artists. Sixty eight works were selected from 825 entries submitted by 294 artists. Award winners will be announced at the opening reception.

An evening of experimental music and performance, featuring fsik huvnx, Pocket of Lollipops, Richard Vergez, and Susan Telemetry.

Lisa Rockford: The She-Monster Sideshow

Louise Erhard: Yes, No, and Everything in Between

Louise Erhard’s work explores the dynamics of her interpersonal relationships and the ways her ego and misperceptions have affected those relationships in the past. Her creation of space and place is executed through collage. Beginning with a clean board, Erhard layers mixed media from everyday publications — cut and pasted from posed advertising imagery and the discarded decorative elements from our collective pasts. Her use and manipulation of common imagery of architectural elements is intended to create visual representations of the everyday struggle with one’s ego and the desire to rise above it.

Lea Nickless: Water & Oil

Jan. 22 – Feb. 20, 2011
Opening Reception: Fri., Jan. 21, 6-9 pm

The works presented are a meditation on the environmental catastrophe in the Gulf of Mexico. In this series, Lea Nickless floated oil pigment on water to create work oddly reminiscent of NASA satellite imagery of the area focusing on the unseen damage, the loss of microscopic creatures. In another series, portraits of diatoms, the most abundant form of phytoplankton and the foundation of the oceanic food chain, are rendered in white ink on tarpaper.
