The Hollywood All-Media Juried Biennial

May 17 – June 29, 2003
Opening Reception: May 16, 2003, 7 - 10 pm

This exhibition builds on the recent success of the Center’s biennial print exhibitions by expanding to include works in any media. Open to all Florida residents, the Hollywood All-Media Juried Biennial, 2003 attracted more than 175 applicants from St. Petersburg to Monroe County. The exhibition’s goal is to provide a venue for Florida’s emerging artists and art students, as well as well-respected established artists, by allowing their work to be judged on its own merit without knowledge of the artist’s history. This exhibition is one of the many in which the Center engages and serves to strengthen the development of our local arts community.

Opening the venue to an all-media competition not only allowed the participation of more individuals, but also provided a more contemporary and diverse measure of artwork being created by Florida artists. The exhibition represents 66 artists in total, including six honorable mentions and four award winners.

This year’s jurors, husband and wife duo Ed del Valle and Mirta Gomez, have been professors of photography at Florida International University for over 20 years. Their photographs of the Yucatan have received both national and international recognition. Del Valle and Gomez are the only artists to ever receive a double Guggenheim Fellowship.
