Summer Arts Camp Tackles More Challenging Shows

This summer, the Art and Culture Center of Hollywood tackles more challenging shows in its first session of Broadway Actors Advanced. On Saturday, July 10 at 2 p.m., 22 students, ages 12-18 enrolled in the first session will perform the school edition of RENT at the Hollywood Central Performing Arts Center, 1770 Monroe St. The teens will rehearse rigorously for four weeks in order to perfect the show.

Based on Jonathan Larson’s Pulitzer-Prize winning Broadway musical based loosely on Puccini’s opera La Boheme, the story follows a year in the lives of seven friends living the Bohemian life in New York’s East Village in 1989-1990. The story centers around Mark and Roger, two roommates. While a former tragedy has made Roger numb to life, Mark tries to capture it through his attempts to make a film. In the year that follows, the group deals with love, loss, AIDS, and modern-day life in one truly powerful story. The story shows how much can change in the 525,600 minutes that make up a year.

Show admission is $7 for adults and $4 for children 12 and under. For tickets, call (954) 921-3274, ext. 232 or click here. Box office opens at 1 p.m. on the day of the show. Please be advised that this show is a PG-13 performance and has mature themes and may not be appropriate for all audiences. RENTSCHOOL EDITION is presented through special arrangement with Music Theatre International (MTI). All authorized performance materials are also supplied by MTI.

The final session of Broadway Actors Advanced, which begins on Monday, July 19, will end with a performance of Bugsy Malone on Saturday, Aug. 14 at 2 p.m.
