Sara Stites: New Work
April 9 – May 29, 2016
Opening Reception: Friday, April 8,
6 – 9 pm
In her recent works, Sara Stites engages in a dialogue between conscious and un-conscious mark-making. She creates large, mixed-media drawings, and then, using mostly functional objects from her studio, she builds precarious, tentative “sculptures” that are posed in front of these works.
The sculptures become integrated into the world of the drawings because they mimic the hue and forms articulated there. By manipulating the light sources, cast shadows further “blend” the 3D and the 2D elements into a refined whole. Then, the work is photographed to produce the final artifact of her unique process.
Originally a New Yorker, Sara Stites moved to South Florida in 1996,
living first in the Keys and now in Miami, also spending half the year in Thomaston, Maine. She has a BFA from Syracuse University and an MFA from Pratt Institute. Her work has been exhibited locally and abroad, most recently at the MDC Museum of Art & Design in Miami, and in Paris and Nice with Galerie Hellenbeck. Her work is in several notable collections, including the Perez Art Museum Miami.
