Millree Hughes and Peter Boyd McLean: Lummox
This exhibition presents a selection of drawings by artist Millree Hughes and a related film by Peter Boyd McLean. The drawings are of the Lummoxes glam rock-loving hooligans that came on holiday to the little resort village of Towyn, North Wales, where Hughes grew up. The characters in the drawings are permanently fixed in their lost heyday, the 1970s, peering at the present through a haze of smoke. Hughes began these drawings in 2004, while living in New York. As the Lummoxes cavorted on the page, he imagined them forming an eponymous band.
The band was formed to play during Art Basel Miami Beach in 2005 and McLean’s film is a mocumentary of the show. Peter Boyd McLean began making cut-up video as part of the Duvet Brothers in London in the 1980s, most famously in the video for the Number 1 hit, Pump up the Volume, by MARRS. He later moved into comedy and reality TV.
