Karen Starosta-Gilinski: Cloud 9
June 9 – Aug. 5, 2012
Opening Reception: Fri., June 8, 6 - 9 pm
Born in Saint Paul, Minnesota, raised in Venezuela, and currently living and working in Miami, Karen Starosta-Gilinski is a contemporary artist who takes provocative textured objects and alters them – she starts to break them apart and puts them together with other objects until they become visually satisfying and strong enough to express the unique look of a character or situation. The results are whimsical, humorous, and at times unsettling works of art. For Cloud 9 she will show small and large scale sculptures. These works seem cute and innocent at first, but actually involve psychology and explore personality traits ranging from tender and sweet to menacing and complicated.
Karen Starosta-Gilinski obtained a BFA and graduated Cum Laude from The Miami International University of Art & Design. Her work has been exhibited throughout the US, Europe, Latin America, and Asia and is included in important private collections in the US, South America, and Europe. Her work has appeared in various publications, including The Miami Herald, Brickell Reporter, El Nuevo Herald, and The New Times, among others.
