Family Day: Nego Gato African Brazilian Music and Dance Ensemble

Sun, Feb. 24, 2008, 1 pm
FREE, ArtsPark Outdoor Stage

Through music and dance that has survived for over 500 years, the Nego Gato African Brazilian Music and Dance Ensemble brings to their audiences the living history of Africans brought to Brazil during the period of the slave trade. The mission of the company is to empower and enrich the world community through performance as well as education in the African Brazilian arts of music, dance and capoeira, a form of martial art/dance. Company Director Jose Sena grew up immersed in the sounds of carnival, Candomblé spirituality, and the street music of Brazil. Join us in taking a trip and experiencing the authenticity of the culture of Sena’s native land.

The 45-minute show will be followed by a 15-minute, interactive period with company members showing children different instruments and movement associated with capoeira. In the event of rain or other adverse weather conditions, the performance will occur at the Hollywood Central Performing Arts Center, located at 1770 Monroe St.
