Free Family Day: Delou Africa Dance Ensemble

Sun., April 19, 2009, 1 pm
FREE, ArtsPark at Young Circle

Experience African culture through drumming, dancing, and singing!

Formed in 1987, the motivation and inspiration behind Delou Africa Dance Ensemble arose from a need to preserve and showcase African dance, drums, and culture.

Delou is a Woloff word that means, “Back” or “return to”. Having to go back to Africa to study dance, music and culture, founding member Njeri Plato-Dioubate then felt it was appropriate to name the company Delou Africa Dance Ensemble (back to Africa).

Delou members are dedicated to the preservation of African culture. They draw upon a wide range of influences, both traditional and contemporary, to achieve their artistic expression. Delou’s core vision is inspired by the West African folklore tradition, but are open to other folkloric art forms from other regions of Africa as well as Caribbean, Haitian, and Cuban Folklore.

Delou has performed at numerous venues such as many Black History events and Miami Dade book fairs, and at The University of Miami cultural affairs, Barry University, Florida Memorial College, FIU, FAMU, Capital Hill in Tallahassee, Viscaya Museum, and The Museum of Natural History.
