Thurs, Aug. 23, 2007; 7pm
Artspark at Young Circle (US-1 and Young Circle)
The Art and Culture Center of Hollywood in partnership with the Seminole Tribe of Florida will present a free outdoor performance by Amokura at the ArtsPark at Young Circle in downtown Hollywood. The night kicks off at 6pm with a free storyelling presentation by Emmett “Skeme” Garcia, the author of the children’s book, “Coyote and the Sky – How the Sun, Moon and Stars Began.”
Following Garcia’s presentation is a performance by Amokura at 7pm. Amokura is a traditional Maori performing arts group from Aotearoa (Land of the Long White Cloud), otherwise known as New Zealand. A pan-tribal group with members representing many different tribes throughout Aotearoa, Amokura will perform a variety of traditional Maori chants, action songs, implement medleys and “haka.” The most popular form of song and dance amongst the Maori, “Kapa Haka” has been traditionally used to intimidate and ward off enemies through the power of the dance and the intimidating faces of the warriors. Many Maori traditions and culture are similar to those of many Native American tribes, and this performance is the product of on-going cultural exchanges between the Seminole Tribe of Florida and their Maori family members of New Zealand.
The production will also feature performances by Seminole and other Native American artists. Don’t forget to bring your chairs and blankets to enjoy this exciting presentation of indigenous cultural arts from around the world.
