About Distance Learning Arts Studio
Distance Learning Arts Studio teaches the visual and performing arts, music, and literature to students in Broward public schools via a two-way teleconferencing system operated by the Broward Education Communications Network (BECON).
In partnership with artists, cultural organizations and community groups, the Center delivers free instruction to classrooms and media centers that integrates the arts into a variety of curriculum areas, including math, language arts, history and cultural studies.
Since the program’s inception in 2005/06, the Center has broadcast more than 350 Distance Learning sessions to more than 15,000 students and 1,000 educators in Broward County Public Schools – about 1,200 students per year. More than 200 previously aired sessions are currently archived at the Center’s website and can be downloaded at no charge.
All curricula for the Center’s youth education programs follow Next Generation Sunshine State Standards set by the Florida Department of Education as well as National Core Standards. By adhering to state curriculum standards, the Center assures that the proven benefits of the arts are applied in all subject areas.
The Distance Learning Arts Studio is funded in part by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation as part of its Knight Arts Challenge, BBX Capital Foundation and the Helen Ingham Foundation. Support Distance Learning with a gift today – your donation will be matched by the Knight Foundation!
